friends: if you tend to post somewhat personal stuff, you can set the post to be visible only to your friends. you can mark each user as a friend when viewing their profile. removing a friend will remove their ability to see your friends-only posts
search: narrow your search results by telling avalantern whose post it is, what kind of post, and what it's tagged with. for example, "in:blogs user:thelowlypeon tag:apple iphone"
