NGOs and my Hypocrisy

[THE Lowly Peon] [21 June 2010]
A while back, daisy and I had a pretty heated conversation about pollution and who's responsible. My argument seemed crystal clear to me: no one person can change the world, but everyone has a vote. Her argument, clearly from the perspective of someone who grew up under the Chinese communist

Working after Work

[THE Lowly Peon] [20 June 2010]
I like my job because after 5pm, I can forget all about it. In fact, I think that most Americans tend to choose jobs with that in mind. And I say Americans because, after living in China, I don't think it's a global phenomenon.

WoD: Food

[THE Lowly Peon] [19 June 2010]
Usually when I'm bored, and though this week has been busy I sure have been bored, I eat lots of little snacks all the time. Worse, the snacks fill me up, but something in my upbringing tells me i still need to eat meals three times a day. So for my week of discontent, I've been much more aware of my food intake. And it's felt great.

What's the Point

[THE Lowly Peon] [18 June 2010]
Well, I'm feeling a bit down about Avalantern today. For three reasons: conversations I've been having, a comic I read, and because there are so many small changes I want to make, just without enough time to change them.

China Car Crash #4

[THE Lowly Peon] [16 June 2010]
About 100m from my home. We were in the taxi, turning left on a green light. Some guy in a fancy super expensive car (read: "more important than us") made a U-turn without looking and smashed into us. Our driver, cool local guy, said he hurt his head; I hurt my knee pretty bad. The fancy car guy (aka guilty party) got out of the car and started get

WoD: Running

[THE Lowly Peon] [16 June 2010]
I think its funny how much i hate running until about thirty seconds before the end of my run, and then i love it.

I can do that too!

[THE Lowly Peon] [15 June 2010]
Today, while riding my bike home from work, I saw a young boy squeezing his water bottle to create a steady stream of water.

English Question

[THE Lowly Peon] [15 June 2010]
My friend is studying for an English test and this one stumped me because all four options sound awful.

WoD: Cold Showers

[THE Lowly Peon] [13 June 2010]
One small change I've made for my Week of Discontent is that I've been taking shorter, colder showers. I've done this before, but have somehow fallen out of practice. daisy always makes fun of me for taking such co

Week of Discontent*

[THE Lowly Peon] [13 June 2010]
My girlfriend, the wonderful daisy, is out of town this week. And, perhaps surprisingly, that's not nearly as fun as it sounds**. Nellie always says idle minds breed idle thoughts, and I think that has to do with how full your glass generally is.

Sleeping at Starbucks

[THE Lowly Peon] [13 June 2010]
You may have heard me say it before: the biggest differences between America and China are the smallest differences.

3G vs Wifi in China

[THE Lowly Peon] [11 June 2010]
So now I have two devices that can access the Internet over 3G (my cellular data connection): my iPhone 3GS and my iPad. I've spent the last few days using it a lot, and I've found something interesting.

Musical Genius

[THE Lowly Peon] [07 June 2010]
I can't get enough of this right now. I think I've listened to Radiohead's In Rainbows about ten times in the last three days. And I've lis
