here in houston, gender roles are quite different than other places i've been/lived. in public, one very rarely sees people alone— they are almost always in couples. most cars you look in have a guy and a girl. almost as if it's shameful to not be with a special honey. gender roles really fascinate me.

[19 September 2007]I really like your use of the term "special honey."

[19 September 2007]Would that be "gender roles"? Sounds more like "couples roles." Or maybe "singles shame." I mean, if you saw lots of men w/o women, but no women w/o men, then I'd call it a gender thing, as if to imply a woman is worthless without a man, etc. Houston: codependency capital of the US?

[19 September 2007]poppy, i suppose you're right. i guess i was generalizing when i said gender roles and in the midst of that generalization i started thinking about this particular subject. either way, gender roles fascinate me, especially when traveling

[20 September 2007]gender roles are well pretty well defined here in the south. women are good housewives who gossip a lot and men bring home the money, watch football, drink beer and drive trucks. i think the couples thing goes along with it, too. women, especially, are supposed to have boyfriends or husbands. it's our purpose in life to have babies, you know.
