screen sharing
30 October 2007, 10:45pm

i've recently installed leopard on my computer. in fact, i did a clean install (i erased everything and started anew), so my computer feels wonderful. better than the feeling of riding a bike with a new chain. well, almost that good.

i won't bore you with the details of how amazing leopard is, since i assume most of you either don't care or you've heard it from me already (but man, it's so cool!)

one feature i think is particularly swell on a very functional level is this new application called screen sharing. it works in a few different ways to make it exceptionally easy for the mac impaired, but each end up doing the same thing.

essentially, this new app allows you to not only "chat" verbally with another person (who also has leopard) over the internet, but you can share screens. so my screen becomes yours, or yours becomes mine (there's always a mini screen of the other in the corner so you can see what's going on there as well).

not only is this super convenient for grabbing files (you can seek files yourself and copy them to your computer, with the other user's permission, of course), but it's also an excellent tool for teaching or learning. so the next time my mom a friend has no idea what to do with a *.dmg file, rather than spending an hour explaining it over the phone, i can show it to her! how cool is that?!

and i assume, since it's an apple product, that it's secure. based on my little experience, the security all revolves around the other user accepting "an invitation to screen sharing". so if you share, be sure to watch. :)

so everyone get leopard so we can play on each other's computers!

Benji!

Saulemander, as far as I understand it, Java just wasn't updated for Leopard. However historically this has been the case with an upgrade. Upgrades to Java usually happen within a month. Also, if you know anything about Steve Jobs, you know that he hates Java so this is no surprise. And with the exception of PMDB.jar and Peter's Space Invaders game, all java apps just feel out of place and are painful to use. So this isn't really upsetting most of us.

agreed. PMDB.jar and Peter's galaxy quest are probably the greatest programming feats ever

also: apparently java really does work just fine. i've had no issues with it. and if benji and john gruber say so, the only higher authority would be steve himself. or neil young, but i'm not sure he'd really know for sure...
