THE Lowly Peon

last.fm
10 April 2008, 1:53am

so i found myself yesterday in that crazy mood i occasionally find myself in where i feel something just needs to change. something felt wrong. it was a pretty lousy day, but i couldn't do the usually fancy dinner (not the same here) and i had no idea where to look for a ridiculously expensive pen. so, instead, i got a new toy. and it's free. hulkamaniac has been trying to get me to use last.fm for ages now. it's a neato little site that helps track your music and suggest more. i tried setting it up a few years back, but i didn't like how it disregarded your past playcounts, and how it tried to guess if you were cheating (if you listened to 50 minutes worth of music in 45, it wouldn't count any of it... or something). but they've fixed it since then. you can upload your historical data (but mine is having problems), and it allows you to set how much of a song is considered listening to the "whole song".they've got software for the iphone, which means whenever i listen to music on my iPhone, you can see what i'm listening to. on my iPhone, i can also see album art, a bio of the artist, as well as upcoming concerts. how amazing is that?! and it works over EDGE, so i can use it anywhere (except japan or korea)so i think you guys should check it out. it's pretty amazing. if you wanna see what i'm listening to, my user name is thelowlypeon. (note: i've only had this for a night, so the music is mainly my night time music. give me some time and you'll see what i've been listening to!)

I don't like that while it starts with your iTunes playcounts it forks from them and becomes its own entity. I would rather have something that just follows my iTunes playcounts and displays data on those.

Hmmm... I vaguely remember something doing that. But seriously, I much prefer the way your play counts logging works, Peter.

Benj, i'm with you (and thanks!), but it's so much easier when someone does all the debugging for you! especially when you have web development ADD and just want to always move on to another huge project that'll never finish...

i figured out why it wasn't updating my historical data. turns out the last.fm application doesn't "scrobble" music unless it's on a local drive. i've read some forums (briefly) and found that the best way is likely just to use a different scrobbler app. one guy even suggested copying it all over just to update. yikes!

Alright, I'll give it a try! But if this scrobblering business slows down my computer it is getting the ax.
