THE Lowly Peon

bikes! (part 2)

let me tell you. hangzhou is quickly growing on my list of favorite cities. so the weather has been improving quite a bit lately here in humid hot hangzhou. and i'm starting to really understand the balance of life: weather bad, pollution not horrible; weather good, pollution nearly unbearable. my disgust for cars is growing fast, and the hippy in me is coming out with a vengeance. the next time you get in your car (if you do), think about how difficult it is for that lowly peon in china to breathe, how black his boogers are this time of year, and how dizzy he feels whenever he's not in an air conditioned (with filters) environment. i know you're "just one person", but all of us our "just one person", and together, we make a lot of people. so i vowed this weekend (built up form several months) to never get into a car unless it's a) absolutely necessary or b) the car is at 50% or higher capacity and has a seat left over, and will arrive at my destination whether i'm in it or not. (i suppose the second may require explanation. i really just mean i'll take my ride to work because there are two others going every day anyway and i might as well go with them. this will change, though, if the driver goes to america or is absent for any period of time.) as a continuation of my previous post about 'bikes!', i will tell you how great it is to be a hippy. as daisy pointed out, there are two bike dropoff/rental places near my house. so, today, when i got off the bray bus, i got onto a bike. i wasn't really sure where to go, since i've always just taken the bus, and the bus goes on the big ugly highway, usually full of traffic and pollution. so i wandered southwards, knowing i'd hit a river. and BOOM! i made it home, blowing by all those suckers in their cars, in about 40 minutes (15 by bray bus), versus my usual 1 - 1.5 hours! i love bikes! and i love that hangzhou will let me use theirs for free, and let me laugh at all the suckers who think they're important for sitting in their cars on the phone in traffic for hours!
