THE Lowly Peon

avalantern update (speed)
21 September 2009, 1:30pm

the speed of avalantern has been unbearably slow. i know. i think that may be why only a handful of you are ever really doing anything on it (and i love you for it!). i sent a request to my hosting service to see if they could figure anything out. i'll let you know what they say.

in the last few days, i've been thinking about it. i tested the hell out of all my db queries, and the page sizes aren't really that big. in fact, you can see that the page generates in under a second each time (see the number at the bottom of any page). i think i figured it out.

before, i was checking twitter every few minutes. in doing so, i was checking for every user, and for every user, i was checking the av database. i think that must be what's slowing everything down.

so i changed it to be every 15 minutes. it'll still post your avalantern tweets every 5, but it'll pull your tweets from twitter only every 15 (the timestamps will come with them). we'll see if that speeds things up. if it does, that'll be my next project.

just thought you may want to know!

so if you disable the updates and the recent panel, it's actually pretty fast these days! how exciting!

Yeah, the speed seems fine except for the recent activity page which seems to NEVER work for me.

WJerome: really? only the recents? i've been thinking of redoing the recents. making it so only the last 15 or so items are there, and the rest are stored in an "archive" to make loading faster. that'll be a project though.

i think what it may be is just that the server needs to load it all into memory. because if i'm being active on av, everything is fast. it's just the first time there in a while (ten minutes+) that makes it slow.

either way, i'm frustrated with it

thelowlypeon: The blogs link is fairly slow, but often the recent activity page doesn't even load. Must be the servers, I guess...
