THE Lowly Peon

iPad Day, Part 2
16 March 2010, 12:31am

Hooray! I found someone that will carry my iPad to China in the middle of May. This is perfect timing, because the iPad (with 3g) will ship only just beforehand ("in early April")!

For a long while, I was worried I wouldn't be able to get one until July, when I go to benji and keri's wedding.

I'm going to buy a 64gb iPad with 3g. The top of the line. Though I don't plan on using the 3g just yet (it would require me getting an account with a completely different company in China, assuming it would even work), I figure it'll make it easier to sell when the next generation comes out, and I really want to have the aGPS, which is only available on the 3g model.

I'm going for 64gb because I figure I'll be using this heavily when I travel, so it'll be nice to have enough space to store lots of movies. Plus, I figure it's only $100 more for double the space, so why not.

I can't wait until May!

Wait....more space? To store lots of movies?!? I thought this wasn't a media consumption device ;)

l4saule: you know, my original post contained parenthesis pointing that out, just for you. but i still think it's absurd that you consider the iPad to be only good at "media consumption" even though that is completely unrelated to the device itself, but more related to the software on the device, and how it's being marketed (which is arguably the only thing you're considering when you say it is a "media consumption device" but the MS Courier — a device which could possibly never be created — isn't).

Benji!

It isn't a "media consumption device"! It is a "device"! Don't pigeon hole it!

How would you like it if I called you a fart face? I mean, while yes, you are a fart face, you are also many other things! Like a poop face! And a pee face! And booger face!

Benji!

P.S. I totally don't know you well enough to call you a fart face. So, I uhh... was just kidding. You're face is perfection.

Hahaha, benji, that was funny

saulemander, what I don't understand is how you're completely overlooking the capabilities of the device and looking only at the marketing. I shouldn't even say "the device", but "both devices", as you are obviously comparing it to that video of the courier you saw on engadget.

If Apple released a video a year before the iPhone was released (which is likely what the courier is, assuming it is even ever produced), and the video only showed making calls and sending emails and SMS, would you call the iPhone a communication only device? What if, then, a year after it was released, you saw what the iPhone was capable of. Would you still call it a communication only device?

The iPad demonstration showed a basic ten or so things. That courier video showed different things, because it is arguably being marketed to a different (less broad?) crowd. But what it boils down to is:

  • The iPad has a big touch screen
  • The courier has two touchscreens, each about half the size of the iPad
  • The courier has a big split in the middle, which they argue makes it "feel" more like a notebook, while the iPad doesn't, which makes it look more like a big iPhone (I said "look"!)
  • One device "apple fanboys" are crazy about
  • One device "anti-apple fanboys" are crazy about

That's it.
