I just got an invitation via text message to meet someone "at Vineyard for Green Drinks" tonight. Green Drinks sounded familiar, but it seemed impossible to have what I thought it was — a group of hippies and academics that get together to drink, socialize, and talk about environmental issues — in Hangzhou.
As any other geek would do, rather than asking him, I googled it. Sure enough, there's a Green Drinks organization meeting at a place called the Vineyard, a local wine place up in northern Hangzhou. It sounds really interesting. From their site:
Green Drinks is an international group with over 650 active cities worldwide. It is an informal gathering for people working in the environmental field, energy, sustainability, or those who are just interested. The goal of the meeting is to socialize, network, learn, and stay current on local and worldwide green topics. Anyone is welcome to join, including people from business, non-profit, NGOs, education, government, and design sectors or any other interested individuals. There is no membership fee, just pay for your own drinks.
so we went tonight. it was pouring rain (my feet are brown from my shoes staining them). the talk was short and more about the woman's company than about energy. it was fun meeting people, but the academic aspect was disappointing. maybe next time? the talk was what I'd see in high school, where the student was super prepared, but the prep was nothing more than making a power point (shudder) to read from for the presentation.
