THE Lowly Peon

A trip to Guangzhou
13 May 2010, 3:57am

I'm in Guangzhou right now, across a bit of water from Hong Kong. It's hot here, but feels good to be back on the road. The city itself is overcast, which I suppose is a step up from the horrible rains and storms that flooded line 3 last week.

So far I haven't really had any time to see the city, which is too bad. My flight here was delayed three hours (on the runway) because of the storm, which pushed us back for pretty much everything else. As a result, we had to work from 7am until 8pm Tuesday, and about the same on Wednesday. Finally, my work is pretty much done, so I'm just on standby, which means I've got the next few days to check it out.

daisy and I are planning on doing some geocaching, which will, we hope, bring us out of this city-wide construction site and show us some of what Guangzhou has to offer. The hotel, office, and everything in between, is a noisy dusty mess of construction. It took me 45 minutes to walk about 100m the other day because I had to go all the way around. (I'll post GPS tracks when I get back to HZ.)

But still, it feels good to be moving around, getting free stuff from the Hyatt and paying for my meals with someone else's money!
