THE Lowly Peon

Week of Discontent*
13 June 2010, 8:22am

My girlfriend, the wonderful daisy, is out of town this week. And, perhaps surprisingly, that's not nearly as fun as it sounds**. Nellie always says idle minds breed idle thoughts, and I think that has to do with how full your glass generally is. My glass is generally half very full, so I like to think that idle minds breed awesome ideas.

I've been taking advantage of the lull-full boredom of daisy's absence, and with it have been trying to make things better in my life. This isn't out of depression, but merely that I realized I was sort of wasting — what was it? time? energy? — something. I had a nice gut hanging over my belt, I had obsessively finished House and LOST, and was spending way too much money of dinner and such, even if I wasn't really all that hungry. Nothing too serious, but, nonetheless, I feel great, having started to make small differences.

So over the next few days, I'm going to post a few of the little changes I've made that have somehow summed into an overall great feeling of betterment.

*Note: The title of this post is in reference to a note hobbeseroo gave me back in 2005, the winter before I went to China, when I had a whopping two months during which all my friends had gone back to school, but I was at home. He gave me a list of movies to watch, titled "Things to do over the winter of discontent". Oddly, I still have that list. And I still have a long way to go.

**Note also: When I said that daisys absence was surprisingly not fun, I was joking. Life isn't nearly as awesome when she's not around.
