THE Lowly Peon

On Thursdays, Sundays, and Working in China
26 August 2010, 12:14am

While in Houston a few weeks back, I noticed that all of our Chinese servers were going down for huge chunks of time without anyone notifying us. Turns out that, due to energy shortages, the Chinese government has ordered that we close the factory on Thursdays, and we'll work on Sundays to make up for it.

This is perhaps more annoying than you realize. Not only because daisy and I have been planning a weekend getaway at the Park Hyatt in Shanghai for the last two months, and have now had to reschedule, but also because we no longer have two day weekends. It's amazing how much a difference that makes, really.

Rumor has it this'll last until mid to late October. Likely an effect of the blasted Shanghai Expo, which has successfully ruined forever my opinion of Shanghai, and much more of the Chinese government.

Anyway, because we had to take advantage of this Hyatt deal before the end of August, we've each taken a vacation day this Friday so we'll be in Shanghai for two and a half days (and leave soon!). It should be a lot of fun!
