THE Lowly Peon

Lousy Timing
23 November 2010, 1:51am

I tried to squeeze 35 minutes of stuff into about 25 minutes I had this morning.

First, some background: I decided recently to get a Mac Mini Server, to be left on 24/7, which, among other things, would provide me nearly all the same services that Apple's for-pay MobileMe service provides. With the Mac Mini server, I can have shared files, synced calendars and contacts, push notifications, and even my own hosted mail. The one thing it wouldn't provide, though, is Find My iPhone, a simple service that connects to your iPhone on call and displays the GPS coordinates if you lose the phone.

So this morning, I was super excited to wake up to an email from Benji informing me that Find My iPhone is now a free service.

Having just woken up, I hadn't yet read my RSS feeds, but assumed with this announcement came the announcement that iOS 4.2, the new operating system for the iPad and the iPhone, is now available.

I ran to my media server, plugged in my iPad, and hit update. It estimated something absurd like 18 hours, but then narrowed down to read 35 minutes. Blast. 6:55, and I need to leave at 7:25.

I went about my usual morning business, but when 7:30 rolled around, and it still had 5 minutes left, I walked out the door with no update.

It was disappointing. But I've got a lot to look forward to tonight!
