apparently, the average US phone service is about $60 per month. for what I pay ~$12/month in china, AT&T would charge me over $100/month here. not to mention the fact that you have to guess how much you'll use it, and get screwed if you use it more or less.
I can charge my Chinese phone card via text message for almost any value at almost any time.

[13 August 2009]i was talking over a few beers with a friend of mine regarding alternative service providers like cricket, who offer unlimited everything for only a handful a month, no contract required. he said he wouldn't switch to cricket even if it was free. i really don't understand why.
