This is pretty exciting for any of you living in China and using an iPhone. Why? Because Opera does some trickery that will essentially get around the Chinese Great Firewall...
Opera Mini for the iPhone, if approved by Apple, uses server side rendering to make the pages load faster. This is a big reason why I hate Blackberries (mainly because of the problems they have with connection to the server), which use three locations around the globe to render content before sending it to the device (they, too, do this for speed). I watched the video available on Opera's site, and it does seem to be much faster than the iPhone's native browser, Safari.
This, of course, depends on where Opera's servers are. Assuming they are outside of China, the servers will access the internet, unfiltered, and send the result directly to my device. This means that China's silly filters will be none the wiser!
So cross your fingers both that Apple approves and that this little plan works!
