I've been curious (and concerned) lately about my coffee drinking and its impact on the environment. Because of coffee bean growing climate, it seems reasonable to believe that drinking coffee is in some way supporting deforestation of rain forests and such. Also, most of the places I go couldn't support growing coffee, which means it'd have to be shipped across many miles.
Years back ~Benji!~ wrote a site for buywell, an organic coffee distributor that made tremendous efforts for supplying "green" coffee, which made me think about it.
For the last few months I've wanted to get to the bottom of it. I think I've been scared of what I find, especially because Starbucks seems like it must be evil, and it's without a doubt the best coffee available in China.
Check out this link for an analysis of how Starbucks is actually way ahead of the game compared to other coffee companies. I still feel like drinking coffee is like driving an SUV — something unnecessary but perhaps enjoyable, with great consequences on the planet — and I should stop drinking. But for now, I feel better about my going to Starbucks to buy my beans (which daisy and I grind ourselves).

[25 May 2010]I'd be more worried about caffeine's affect on your body than coffee's on the planet. Make no mistake! You're addicted!

[25 May 2010]Well, you might not be (I don't know how much you drink!) but I think my parents sure are!

[25 May 2010]bentomas: I think my addiction comes and goes. I never have more than one cup in a day, and the days I dont drink it, I feel fine (I used to want it real bad).
drinking tea (oolong, usually) makes me feel much better, and I don't crash. the strange thing is that oolong has a higher concentration of caffeine than coffee. not sure how that works.
I think if caffeine is consumed in moderation, it can be okay, and sometimes even useful. just like how a glass
of red wine every now and then is good for the antioxidants. (or at least I'll keep telling myself that...)

[27 May 2010]Well, to each his own! I've read enough about how caffeine effects the quality of sleep you get to know I want none of it!
But then again I work at home and can start working when I want and don't need caffeine to help wake me up!
